Belakangan ini terdapat kabar tentang penelitian yang dilakukan oleh para ilmuwan China tentang misteri keindahan pada bulu merak ini. Dalam penelitian itu disebutkan bahwa pemberi warna indah pada bulu merak itu bukahlah berasal dari molekul pemberi warna tetapi oleh struktur dua dimensi yang sangat kecil mirip dengan kristal (ratusan kali lipat lebih tipis dari rambut manusia).

Para ilmuwan itu meneliti rambut-rambut mikro yang terdapat pada serat bulu yang tumbuh pada tulang bulu. Dari penelitian mereka, diketahui bahwa terdapat desain tatanan lempeng-lempeng kecil hitam putih yang tersusun atas batang-batang tipis. Bentuk dua dimensi tersebut tersusun bertumpukan pada rambut-rambut mikro.

Para peneliti berhasil mengungkap bahwa aneka warna indah yang muncul dari bulu merak berasal dari cahaya yang dipantulkan dengan sudut yang beragam yang memiliki perbedaan sangat kecil. Cahaya itu terpantul disebabkan karena ukuran dan bentuk ruang di dalam tatanan kristal tersebut.
